We bought this to protect the matress for the Stokke Mini bassinet. At first we didn't think we would need it, but decided to buy it just in case. We're glad we did, because this has saved our matress more times than not. Since this is our first baby, we had no idea what types of mishaps occur, ranging from leaky diapers to spit up while sleeping. If you don't have a way to protect the matress, it will definitely leak through into the mattress.
This is an expensive product, so if you want an alternative (since you'll likely only use the bassinet for 3 months), try using a thick burp cloth (such as a cloth diaper) where your baby's head will fall. Similarly, put one under where his diaper sits. This should do the trick as long as you check every time and make sure it's not soaked.
