Very nice armoire! Feb 04, 2012

I bought this item after asking the manufacturer (Stork Craft) if the shelves were fixed or adjustable. They are adjustable to a point (restricted only by where the holes are for the metal pin brackets to go). I also asked on another sales site, whose customer service department answered that they were fixed. Actually, you can move the shelves up and down, but they are "fixed" into place by screws through the bracket and into the bottom of the shelves.
This item is beautiful and sturdy. We chose the walnut finish, but it is lighter than other walnut finish furniture I have. It is still lovely and matches the picture included on the site. The frame and drawers are made from wood. The shelves, doors and backing are thinner composite, but well made. It won't hold up to someone running around with a javelin, but it will hold up to most minor household accidents. It is quite heavy, and it took two people to unpack it and move it, but I was able to shift it around by myself by pushing, tilting and rocking it into place.
There are two adjustable shelves inside the cabinet, an optional wardrobe pole, and a wall-mounted catch to prevent tipping. The dimensions inside the cabinet portion are 38" wide x 44" tall (at the shortest point) x 18 1/4" deep. The doors and the outside frame make the opening to the cabinet area smaller, of course. From the floor up to the top of the drawer area (which is also the bottom of the cabinet) measures 26".
We actually are using this as an entertainment cabinet. We had to drill holes through the back panel for the wires to go. The adjustable shelves are rated for 20-ish pounds, and our flat-screen 32" TV is about 15 pounds, so it worked out fine. We made sure to balance the weight by putting heavy stuff in the drawers, meaning a less likely tip-over.
Five stars if it had been solid wood throughout at the regular price, and if there had been more detailed information about the product. I purchased it at sale price, so I'm happy with wood and composite, and feel that it was reasonable. Even though it has portions of composite, it still does not seem cheap or weak.
