Soft little photo book for baby - no chemical smell Feb 27, 2010
By Ingrid Nicholson I was trying to make a photo book for my nephew, and could not figure out which one to purchase on amazon bc I was getting conflicting input from all of the different reviews of these little books. My two primary criteria for the book are: 1) safe for baby (soft, no edges, no plastic chemical smell) and 2) number of pages to hold ACTUAL photos.
I actually ended up going out to stores (Walmart and Babies R Us) to look at the product because I couldn't tell what was true online. I compared two. One is a product by "Bright Starts" from Walmart which is identical to the Baby Einstein Photo Book sold on Amazon.com. The second is this one by Sassy that I'm reviewing, which is sold on Amazon. This book, the Sassy brand, is the hands-down winner from the two.
The Sassy book has no chemical smell, the plastic is very soft (and I wouldn't think twice if my nephew sucked on it), and there are seven 4x6 pockets with one wallet size pocket on the cover. The book isn't stiff or crinkly (it's made of very soft, smooth, matte plastic) when you bend it, so I think it will hold the pictures nicely inside for the ultimate tough baby test... The other product - similar to the Baby Einstein, has the same handle and a similar cover as the B.E. book. It has a VERY strong, toxic plastic smell, the plastic edges are a little sharp and could feasibly cut soft baby skin, and there is only space for five 4x6 photos and one wallet on the cover. The book is stiff and made of shiny, sticky plastic which seems to stick together quite easily. I think that's why it comes with paper between the pages, where the Sassy one does not.
I have not given the book to my nephew yet, that will be the ultimate test. But with regards to the actual product from a consumer point of view, buy this product over the other photo books. I think it's a better product.

Baby loves it, Mommy not so much (for good reason) Nov 19, 2010

Although this little book is excellent in theory, the fact that there's no way to protect the pictures from the copious amount of drool to which they will be subjected diminishes its utility in practice. A simple tuck-in flap or some other design trick would ideally protect the pictures, which get chewed (and chewed and chewed) and ultimately destroyed in this mouth-friendly toy. It's not a big deal to replace the pictures, but the chemicals that dissolve make me nervous and end up sort of corroding the pages, making the sleeves stick together so much it's hard to insert new pictures.

Keep an eye on your child with this product! Apr 26, 2010
By AngelicInterlude Until today, if I had rated this product, it would have gotten 4 stars (I would have deducted 1 star because the plastic bunches up on the pictures). I purchased this look book at Target about three months ago. This morning my 7 month-old daughter was playing next to me and outsmarted the book. She ripped the clear protective sheet clean off one of the photos. I'm thankful I was sitting here with her, or else she'd have had either the clear piece or the picture in her mouth.

bpa pvc and phthalate FREE Apr 24, 2011
By Summer N I contacted the manufacturer to see what chemicals were used in the materials/plastic in this toy since I saw some feedback online stating it had PVC and phthalates. Good news is the newest version of this book is BPA, PVC and phthalate free! -Oh and it's a great little toy, my 9 month loves it!

Thumbs up for this, I actually got this product because it was eligible for free shipping with other items if your order was over $25, but it turns out that it's a beautiful educational toy. You get to put 8 photos inside plus one for your baby on the cover of the album. It's well made and edges are soft so they won't hurt your baby, my baby loves chewing on it :). You can also change photos every now and then so your baby can get to know the names of family members. It's a lovely product, and i would very much recommend it. I also think most of the Sassy brand products are creative and are worth the money.
