4Great product for toddlers who insist on trying to electrocute themselves!  Feb 24, 2010
By Kriss
I ordered these outlet covers after my 17-month-old son unplugged my laptop, the cordless phone base, his baby monitor, the wipes warmer, the lamps, my alarm clock, the DVD player, the Tivo, and the Bose sound dock about 12,448 times. A person can only say "NO" so many times in a day, before he shuts off his hearing & defiantly does what he wants anyway. Kinda like his father. Oh, the joys of parenting.

Anyway, these covers work great. They're a cinch to install, even for a tool-challenged person such as myself. And there's no way he can pry the covers off. *I* sometimes have a hard time simultaneously pushing both buttons and pulling the removable piece off.

I think it's been mentioned previously, but they won't work with the decora-style rectangle outlets. Mine are the old style, with a single screw in the middle of the two plugs, and they fit perfectly. Just be aware that the picture shows them as being white; but the ones I received are actually more of a sand color. It didn't bother me at all; but if you're fussy about your light switch plates matching your outlet covers, these may drive you crazy.

3won't work with some outlets  Nov 10, 2007
By batguano
I agree with the other reviewer that these are a great idea. Unfortunately, almost every outlet in our house has the Leviton-brand square cutouts. These aren't usable with those style (like this Do it Best Grounding Decora Outlet ) recepticles.

4very effective  Feb 19, 2008
By R. Escobar "research mom"
I used this product to cover the plug for my daughter's monitor. Since installing (easy to do) she actually has not gone near any outlets. The only down side is that the cover only allows one small brick plug rather than being able to utilize both outlets.

1Poor design  Aug 12, 2011
By Matthew
I was pleasantly entertained by many of the reviews on this product and was looking forward to the arrival of this "Safety1st Outlet cover." However, when I tried it out, I was disappointed and wished I knew what I was getting before I ordered it. Now that I have read more reviews, many of my concerns have been mentioned by others:
1. The maximum cord size is AWG 16/2. That's typical insulated lampcord [as pictured on the box]. You won't be able to use a standard grounded cord with 3 wires. That rules out your MacBook, your flatscreen TV, any self-respecting wire connected to a 3-pronged plug.
2. It's complicated. I'm no slouch, but winding the cord and tucking it under the tab and holding it in place while snapping the outer cover over the whole mess of spaghetti is like trying to wind a pocketwatch from the inside out.
3. It's not reasonable for a frequently used device [laptop]. Winding your cord through tight turns is bad enough once, but the wear and tear on a cord to repeatedly route it under the tabs on the base plate is unsafe.
4. It has a deterrent value of ONE SECOND. If you route a AWG 16/2 cord as directed and close the cover over the baseplate and then apply a 10lb mass to the cord [away from the wall], the base plate bends and the cover pops off, exposing the partially removed plug.
That takes about one second. I'm quick... but not THAT quick.

There is an accurate disclaimer on the box that reads: "CAUTION: This product is only a deterrent. It is not a substitute for proper adult supervision. Discontinue use when your child becomes old enough to defeat it."

Does your toddler weigh ten pounds or more? Can s/he pull on a cord? If so, s/he will be able to defeat it.
You may hear a faint 'click' when the cover pops off.
You may not.

*note: My particular model consists of a baseplate which mounts by way of a center duplex wall plate screw. It has 2 "pinch" tabs but NO top tab. The picture on the box shows a baseplate with a support tab on the top. The cover has a raised "Safety 1st" logo without paint. The model number on the box is 48308.

4Useful thing for the house  Oct 20, 2007
By Genevieve S. Gibson
My son doesn't have an interest in trying to stick his finger into the socket but he certainly likes to pull plugs. I was spending half of the day trying to keep him away from all of the outlets. These outlet covers have solved the problem. I can get to things if need be but he can't. They are easy to put on and remove with a minimum of fuss. I am tempted to give these as gifts to other new parents. Inexpensive, simple and safe.
