The ANSWER to all the negative reviews. (You can thank me later OXO.) Apr 09, 2012
By Kenneth M. Saltzman Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2T0Q0NUCJYWQ8 It's so simple really.
The negative reviews focus almost exclusively on the size of the holes being too big...not restricting the flow of shirt soaking fluid enough. Well...I kind of agree with that. It would be nice to start with smaller holes -- and nicer still to be able to adjust the size of the holes as the wee one got better at drinking.
The answer: Buy at least two of these cups.
I know...right now you are thinking I am an OXO executive dreaming up a way to make lemonade out of lemons. But I'm not.
It's quite simple. You can easily fit TWO of the plastic baffles into one cup. And trust me...they both fit snugly. If you put the top insert with the tabs right over the center of the holes on the bottom one, you have effectively cut the flow of liquid by at least 75%. And by adjusting the the placement of the top baffle...it can go from 75% to 50% to 25% and then to just one baffle.
Still don't believe me...watch the video.
OXO would be wise to sell these cups with two baffles...or at least sell the baffles separately. I think it's a good quality and somewhat useful cup on it's own, which is why I am giving it 4 stars. But I think I made it more useful...in a way that would generate many more 5-star reviews.
You're welcome OXO.

Excellent product + tip for use Jul 03, 2011
By H. Gutierrez I came back to this product to buy another one for my 13-month-old, and decided to make a review because when I was considering buying it, I had doubts given previous reviews (that said liquids spill easily, etc). I'm also buying this for a cousin with a 15 month old.
My daughter can drink from a regular glass as long as I hold it for her, or a bottle with no nipple (again, as long as I hold it for her). The FIRST time I gave this training cup for her she took it in her hands and was able to drink from it. She usually doesn't want to hold cups, she wants me to hold them for her, even though she's perfectly capable of holding a sippy. However I don't like giving her sippys because of tooth decay concerns and also because to me, some of them are really like a fast-flow nipple bottle...
I wouldn't use this product unless you actually want your toddler to learn how to drink from a regular cup. If you look at it like a sippy, forget it. It's a training cup, so that's why I saw it was a great idea to use the lid just to reduce (of course not to eliminate) spillage. It is EXCELLENT for that, it's a "regular" cup with help.
A tip I've found pretty useful: filling the cup only half way. That way liquid will come out slower, easier for toddler to manage.

OXO Tot Training Cup Sep 13, 2010
By NC This cup has 3 parts, the cup, and the lid which consisits of a removeable guard to somewhat prevent spills and the part that screws onto the cup. Unfortunately if the lid isn't on the rim of the cup itself isn't at all smooth, enough to scrape my hand while washing the cup. For this reason I wouldn't reccomend this cup for a child who can unscrew the lid.
The lid does allow a decent amount of water to spill out, but it is a good step between a sippy cup and a regular cup.
I had a little trouble telling from the picture, but the guard preventing the water from comming out is hard plastic. It snaps into place and I wouldn't expect to have a problem with it comming out too easily.
My 20 month old son seems to like this cup alot and hasn't had as much of a problem getting too much water like he would with a regular cup. He has however tilted it up too high and ended up with a wet shirt. I'd suggest starting out with very little water, enough for a few sips at the most, and just planning to refill it often at first.

Needs Improvement. Follow up 4/2011 Dec 01, 2010
By NY Rebel We bought this for our toddler to train him to use a open cup. It is as described but needs to have a few improvements to be an effective training aid. First, the flow is basically unrestricted. It needs to have multiple baffles included that you can change to adjust the flow according to your tots understanding of how to use a open cup. Second, the lip profile actually makes it harder for a tot to drink without spilling liquid down the chin. Our toddler actually does a better job with a regular open cup than with this training cup.
Follow up 4/2011: I felt the need to revisit this item because I felt that many parents are going to be dissappointed by this cup...The fact is this cup fails as a training cup. It is a good design but did not carry the concept far enough.... it does not stop the child from dumping the entire drink on themselves. We did not buy it to "replace" a sippy cup, we bought it to train our tot to use a open cup....now we just use the open cup to train him because this cup failed to do anything differently than the open cup....unless you count the curved lip causing him to dribble liquid down his chin....

Great transition cup Mar 20, 2011
By scanpennett This cup is what it says, "training cup". I was shocked at all the negative reviews but, noticed many of the reviewers were using these as a replacement for a sippy cup. Yes - no valves, no straws or sippy tops - you will have some spillage to begin with. What it does is eliminates the child tipping the cup too far towards the face and dumping the entire drink on themselves. I purchased this cup when my son turned 2 because he had only been drinking out of straw cups since 11 months. My son can now, at 29 months, pick up any size cup (even my massive 32oz cups) and drink without much spilling. We only use it at dinner time or when dining out otherwise, he would have a hay day soaking my living room. I've received many compliments and I'm purchasing a couple more.
