Great gate; LOUSY instructions Mar 08, 2012
By Matt This seems to be a very sturdy gate. The bulk of the gate is lightweight steel bars; hinges and most connecting components are plastic, but I would prefer strong plastic to soft metal any day. Securely installed, we have no hesitation about leaving this gate installed at the top of a staircase. (We did have to fabricate an acceptable mounting surface on one side, since moulding on our wall prevented us from attaching this gate to an even vertical surface; this would have been necessary for just about any gate.) It is, in this sense, a good product.
That said: the instructions are awful. This isn't a matter of poor translation; this is an American company and I was reading the English-language instructions. (The instruction book also includes French and Spanish, as I recall.) Language wasn't the problem. - Diagrams, tucked away in an appendix at the end of the book, are tiny and difficult to interpret. - The instructions attempt to describe certain tasks, but stop short of a full description, leaving the installer wondering what he's missing. - Some of the instructions are simply wrong. (For example, there are two sets of screws + caps, each of which must be used at a different place on the gate. The instructions swap these, and it's up to the installer to figure that out.)
As a result, an installation task that should have taken 15-30 minutes (excluding the fabrication of a mounting surface) took 1-2 hours. If I had had less assembly experience, or if I had been distracted, I might never have successfully assembled it.
I'll also add that the wood screws included, while adequate, were made of softer metal than some similar screws I had laying around the house; my $30 power screwdriver began to strip the screwheads, so I removed the Kidco-included wood screws and replaced them with my own. The replacement screws worked very well. (I think my replacements were 2-inch flat-head steel wood screws.)

Almost perfect gate, flawless customer service Feb 09, 2012
By Jason Moss Great gate! I have two of these (black), one at the top and one at the bottom of a long straight stairway. The bottom one uses an extension. These gates were easy to install (mine are on angles, where wall and rail diverge), and are easy to use. The gates are extremely quiet, which is great, as the upper gate is near kids rooms. My four year old daughter can open these gates (took a little practice at first, and but she got it), and so can her grandmothers, with one hand. My only (slight) problem is that they don't latch on their own - one has to lift the entire gate slightly to get it to latch - but this is not a big deal, and like I said, I love the gates. I have two other (self-latching) gates from a different brand on an alternate stairway to the upstairs area, and they are extremely loud and clunky to the point that no one really uses them anymore.
KIDCO HAS FLAWLESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: The upper hinge cap did break once, when my daughter THREW open the gate in a hurry, but it was easy to replace. It would have been cheap to replace (only $1 each part, per the online PDF form), but when I called customer service, they replaced both hinges, the spring, and the top hinge cap FOR FREE, with NO SHIPPING. I was kind of shocked, I didn't even ask them to do that, they offered.
In short, these gates are great: good price, easy install, look nice, quiet, easy to use, cheap replacement parts, and excellent customer service. They don't latch on their own, but I don't even really notice that anymore (it's a good idea to double check those self-latching gates anyway!)
4.5 stars for product (-0.5 for no self latch) 5 stars for customer service, price, ease of install, etc. 5 stars overall
Would buy again and have recommended to friends and family.
Great gate Apr 30, 2012
By Claire I really recommend this gate to anyone. I got it to keep my dog in the patio and it works great. My dad had to help me a little bit with the installation, but it's fairly simple.
Kidco angle mount Safeway baby gate Apr 28, 2012
By C Bing Metal gate. Hardware mounts to wall to secure gate for use anywhere...even top of stairs as it has a stop that can prevent gate from swinging out over the stairs or can be used to prevent gate from swinging either direction if needed. Gate can be easily removed when not needed and can be quickly reinstalled to mounts left on the wall or mounts can be unscrewed for later use and stored with gate. Works when gate needs to be installed at an angle on either or both sides or straight across. Entire gate opens fully, not just a small portion to squeeze between. Appears to be sturdy, however did not work on my taller banister, so I did not install and use. Comes with wall template for quick and accurate mounting of hardware.
It works Apr 12, 2012
By Shannon52483 Only gate out there that angles itself to your "oddly" angled walls! The only thing is that the installation was a big pain in the butt! But.... like I said , its the only angle gate out there !
