Decent Crib Jun 23, 2011
By Lindsey I bought this mini-crib for our fourth baby. The crib went together really easily and the directions were clear enough. This crib also comes with a "mattress" which I didn't know. However, the "mattress" that comes with it is only 1" thick. I bought a 3" thick mattress to go with it, and am very happy I did.
The color of the crib surprised me a bit. The description said "honey oak" but the crib looks more like pine. It was much lighter than I anticipated. (I just assumed it would be a bit darker than what was pictured, since it said "oak". However, the crib is exactly the color that is in the picture. I really shouldn't have been so surprised, since it is exactly as pictured.)
Also, the mattress support on this crib is not like that of a traditional crib. I was a little disappointed in that, because the mattress support does not seem very substantial and I am pretty sure it won't hold up as well as a traditional size crib. The mattress support on this mini-crib is a flat support- a thin board boxed in with wood. The thin board does make me a bit nervous about the durability. I doubt this crib will get much use past 9 months for that reason.

Sturdy, safe, good for small spaces (and little babies) Mar 15, 2011

Our baby sleeps in the room with us, and this crib works well in our small bedroom. It's aesthetically pleasing, sturdy, and easy-to-assemble. For the price, it's hard to beat. Also, from the perspective of safety, it's reassuring that Million Dollar Baby (which owns Da Vinci) has never had a crib recall -- that's according to the new edition of Baby Bargains. (Great book, by the way.)
The so-called "mattress" that comes with this crib is useless, however. It's made of cheap foam and is barely an inch thick. You will definitely have to buy a mattress separately. We chose the MDB Crescent Mini Crib Mattress, which we like.
(Just FYI: If you're planning to attach a mobile, this crib works fine with the Tiny Love mobiles. Some cribs have non-standard side rail widths, which makes it difficult to securely attach a mobile to them.)
A last note: if you and your partner are tall people, this may not be the crib for you... your tall baby will probably outgrow it very fast! In our case, that's not a problem. Our little one is in the 30th percentile for height, and this crib is working out fine.
UPDATE: our baby lasted in this crib until the age of 11.5 months. at that point, we bought a full-size IKEA crib!

Good Crib With A Few Minor Negatives Feb 06, 2011

The crib was packaged nicely, and the wood pieces and hardware were of good quality. It was easy to assemble and fit together well, but there were no wood plugs to hide the exposed screws. I guess this is so it can easily be disassembled, but I certainly notice it. Also there was a small chip on one of the side rails that must have happened in shipping. I found the little sheared off piece and glued it back.

nice mini crib, but size didn't work for us for too long. Sep 17, 2010
By gingin I ordered this crib since our second baby was going to sleep in our room longer than his bassinet allowed. He is a big, fast-growing boy so we thought the mini crib would have been perfect until we were brave enough to have the kids share a room.
Nice crib, easy to put together. Finish dents easily.
I bought a piece of 2" foam at the fabric store to put under the mattress so it was thicker- no sense in ordering another mattress at $70!! Only cost me $13 and the mini-crib sheets fit perfectly around both pieces together.
I used this crib for about a month, and then sold it. He was about 16 lbs when we stopped using it. My baby grew too fast and is a wild man right before he falls asleep- this crib was like caging a beast! He is happier having room to stretch out in his normal sized crib. I would suggest using this crib for a tiny, slow-growing baby or instead of a bassinet.
The price was right and it was worth a shot. It wasn't the crib's fault it didn't last long with us, I just had no way of knowing it wouldn't work for long. Very thankful I basically made my money back when I sold it though, especially for only using it for a month.

Beautiful and Sturdy! Jan 12, 2012

We bought the DaVinci Kalani Mini Crib (in white) for our soon-to-arrive daughter because it's the mini version (made by the same company) of the Baby Mod Cadence Crib, which our toddler son now sleeps in. We love it just as much as our son's crib. It's sturdy and easy to assemble, and looks a lot better than many of the other cribs on the market. It's the same size (length and width) as our Pack N Play, but much taller. It looks as if it will last our girl for the first year, at which point we'll turn it into a twin bed for her big brother.
My only complaint is that the mattress that comes with it is horrible. It's flimsy and doesn't fit the crib tightly enough, leaving a gap between the mattress and the sides of the crib (I know up to an inch is allowed on each side, but I prefer a tighter fit). We ended up buying the Naturepedic Organic Portacrib Mattress, and it fits BETTER than the mattress the crib came with. It's a much tighter fit and much less flimsy. We also went with the Carter's Portacrib Sheets, and they fit perfectly.
Some other reviewers were worried about the seemingly flimsy MDF board that is the base for the mattress. It looks fine for supporting an infant's weight and activity level. I think by the age that toddlers start really jumping around in their cribs (around 15-18 months for our son) the crib will have been outgrown anyway.
As a side note: A lot of people complain about the visible hardware in these cribs, but don't realize that they can't put wooden plugs in to cover the screws, because that would be a choking hazard for the baby. Also, the hardware has to be accessible, so that the crib can later be converted to a bed. I feel like DaVinci/Baby Mod actually has some of the better-looking hardware of many of the cribs on the market.
