Love CA Baby, but so darn expensive! Aug 19, 2009

Love this stuff-- perfect for my son's (and my own) skin. Non-greasy, but extra moisturizing-- makes skin smooth as butter. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because, like all of their products, it's ridiculously expensive. I know you often get what you pay for, but I find it highly unlikely their ingredients are THAT expensive. Just a little sad I think this company is making a killing-- I'd actually buy more often (often experimenting with other similar natural products, looking for one that isn't so pricey)if it were cheaper.

I've been using this product since I had my first child nearly 3 years ago. The whole family used it along with the Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body wash plus the Calendula Cream occasionally and the diaper cream for my boy when he was a baby and we loved everything. Unfortunately, they recently changed all of the formulas (without notifying the customers) and now they are horrible. I noticed that the Super Sensitive Lotion had a new design on the label, but I didn't think anything of it. I did notice though that it would burn when I applied it to my face and was making my face very red. At first, I thought perhaps it was just due to it being winter time and us having our forced-air heating on in the house. However, I've never had this problem in the winter before. Now I've read that they changed their formulas and in my opinion they must have just done it for cost savings because they have not added safer ingredients and many people have been complaining of rashes and other problems since the switch. They've lost me as a loyal customer and I would not recommend their products to anyone (unfortunately, I always told my friends and family how great CB products are so now I'll have to notify everyone and make sure they never purchase them).

California Baby has changed its formula and now includes Sodium Benzoate.
From Natural News:
"Derived from a reaction of benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide, sodium benzoate is actually the sodium salt of benzoic acid. Sodium benzoate is a known carcinogenic additive which, when eaten or applied to the skin, gets transported to the liver, where it is supposed to be filtered, and expelled in urine, but the damage gets done before that process is completed.
Sodium benzoate chokes out your body's nutrients at the DNA cellular level by depriving mitochondria cells of oxygen, sometimes completely shutting them down. Just as humans need oxygen to breathe, cells need oxygen to function properly and to fight off infection, including cancer."

Even outside of that article there is great concern about the ingredient and cancer links. I will be returning my product and no longer purchasing from California Baby.

We received some of this stuff from a friend when we had our son. We liked it so much that we continued to use it, now even replacing the normal hand and body lotion that we keep around the house for non-baby uses. The "No Fragrance" is a bit untrue. While they don't add fragrance the lotion itself is not odor free. The scent is roughly equivalent to fresh baking flour or fresh homemade bread. Good stuff!

I love this lotion! I find that with a crawling baby, it protects his knees from becoming rashy. My little guy is always on the go and this really helps keeps his skin healthy and beautiful. I have two cons though. I love that it's natural/organic. But that smell is awful. I realize that this is for sensitive skin, but wowie! The price also is a contributing factor as to why I don't buy California Baby more often. Maybe I moisturize him too much (after every bath or every night) but California Baby doesn't seem to last as long as I'd like.
