3I like it, just one 'small' problem...  Jan 02, 2011
By hj "hj"
I really like the BabyKicks Nursing Pads - Jersey, Set of 3, so when I saw they had a diaper made of basically the same material, I wanted to try it out. I liked it, but there were a few things (for me) that don't make this a 4- or 5-star item...

The Material-- (This I actually give 5 stars)
The item is primarily a Hemp/Cotton blend-- hemp has great absorbency without a lot of the bulk. Very importantly-- you have to wash and dry it a few times to get all the natural plant oils out, so that it softens up and absorbs more. (Some people short-cut this and boil their hemp for 20 mins and then cool them down and wash them) I knew this going in, so this wasn't an issue for me. Just know that it'll be a bit rough at first until it breaks in.

YOU STILL NEED A WATERPROOF COVER. This is important, else the material will saturate and leak through to clothes, bedding, etc. I *will* say that my daughter wet this one and it didn't leak through!!! (I tempted fate without a cover during nap time, and she's a side sleeper) That was impressive, but not sure about how I would have done that over-night. I also don't know about any "#2 situations," we were apparently strictly doing #1 with our test.

The Fit -- (This is where the lower rating comes in)
These diapers say they fit up to 40lbs. I don't know whose 40lbs they were thinking... My daughter is 6mos/25lbs, and I can BARELY get the largest snap setting to fit her. She is a chunker, but there should have still been enough room there. If you have a tall, lean baby, I would see this possibly working better. But if you have a bruiser... I don't recommend it.

Also, I'm sure if it was related to the weight limit issue, but the crotch really seemed to 'bag' off of her, which looked like it would be difficult to get clothes on right.

The wings/tabs are 'backwards' from traditional cloth/disposable tab layouts. It is enough to throw you off at first, but not a deal breaker at all.

BOTTOM LINE - I loved the material and the concept. If the size had been on target, I would have gladly bought a week's worth of just this type of diaper. So sad it wasn't meant to be.

** Update, 6 months later-- She still fits in them, as she leveled out on the growth factor... however it's still at the 'max' setting and won't make 40lbs, I believe. She has worn this overnight and soaked it pretty heavily, but our wool cover didn't have a problem with it. She has also done a MASSIVE #2 in it in the car and again, it held. It stained pretty good after that, and needed sunning, but it didn't impact the ability to be what it is-- a diaper.

5A workhorse fitted  Jun 16, 2011

BUY THIS DIAPER! I was about to give up on cloth diapering at night and for naps because EVERY other CD I tried for those longer periods could not hold up. I bought one of these BabyKicks fitteds on somewhat of a whim -- a last ditch effort -- and I now have a bunch of them in my stash for those times when I need the diaper to really work. My child can go 11 hours at night without a leak using these fitteds. Also, because they are all natural fibers, we've never had to worry about any smells that are often complained about from microfiber and other unnatural materials.

4Decent diaper.  May 17, 2011

The terry is sort of rough. I wouldn't use this diaper overnight. Love the natural fibers and colorful snaps. Washes clean everytime!

4good quality diaper  Nov 21, 2010

I was very please with this diaper. It has a very usable and flexible sizing system. I have used other brans of reusable diapers and this one seemed to work about the same but has a bit more adaptiveness as the child grows. Happy with this product!

3Not all natural - Polyester  Feb 12, 2012
By A. King
The label reads as follows:

50% Organic Cotton
33% Natural Hemp
17% Polyester

Now when you are buying a diaper that is advertised as an Organic diaper, don't you expect it to be just that? Polyester is not and cannot be Organic. (Yes this is partially my fault for not reading the ENTIRE description of the product. The title is very misleading) The diaper is very rough even after multiple washings. It is also VERY bulky. I would not use with the original insert unless it was overnight. I use with a 2 layer hemp fleece insert and it has to be changed every 2 to 3 hours which is fine with me. I do somewhat agree with another users review that this won't fit to 40 pounds. My daughter is 5m old and 19 pounds and the thigh gets snapped on the biggest setting and her tummy gets snapped at the snap right before that. As far as rise goes, she is on the orange so there is some room for length. I know she will most likely thin out when she starts crawling.

I do like the diaper but I don't feel I should be paying $20 per diaper on something that is not even completely natural and I still have to purchase a cover for. Also, as mentioned before, the inserts are super bulky and took me 3 dry cycles in a brand new dryer.

Also 2 of the 6 diapers that I ordered had bad elastic. One of them the casing wasn't even sewn into the diaper. The elastic was free to move around from side to side so when stretched to go around my little ones legs, it ended up in her butt crack. I know how to sew pretty well so I will just fix this myself. The other diaper, the elastic on the back of the waist wasn't even sewn on so there was no elasticity. Luckily the fabric is stretchy so this is not a huge problem.
