Great product! Jan 11, 2009

"vanessa"
I purchased this after reading all of the reviews on here, mainly due to the long play time, and the gradual shutting down of the crib soother. Apon reciept, the picture here does look much different than the item does in person, as far as the screen - but it doesn't make me any less happy with the product. One review complained about the volume, buy my soother does have 2 volume levels, and I think even the loud one, isn't very loud. The quiet is perfect. One review also complained about 2 units that stopped working. I have discovered why! When the batteries begin to fail, the until stops working in phases. All of a sudden the motion wouldn't work on our unit. Because I had read the previous reviews, I initially thought my players was broken too because we still had light and music. Then a few days later, the light would only work for about 5 minutes at a time, but we still had long periods of music. So I thought yep, its garbage. But then my husband said, well, lets just change the batteries. And like new - the whole thing works again!! So I'm guessing that the gradual systems stopping is meant to be an indicator that the batteries are wearing down. It doesn't mean the unit is defective. I didn't check it at first, because I thought they were new batteries - but it turns out my husband and just put in the ones from our old crib player. So with this revelation, I can say I am perfectly happy with this player. I love the length of play, the gradual shut down and I really LOVE the remote function. I'm happy!

Disappointing Baby Einstein Product Feb 26, 2009
By Christa J. Fanelli I'm usually a fan of Baby Einstein products, but this one was a disappointment. The biggest problem is that the admittedly cute and colorful creatures stopped "swimming" after only 2 months. Also, I found the background lighting to be too bright. My baby would often squint and turn away from the harsh light. I felt like I was forcing her to watch TV in her crib! I chose this soother because I like the gradual shutdown, the length of the playtime and the remote control. The first two features were nice; the remote control worked only sometimes even at short range. So, while this soother has some nice features, overall it was not worth the money.

Love the 25 minute play, however a little too bright Nov 19, 2008
By K. Howard I bought this for my 3rd child. I have pretty much every crib soother on the market. I was drawn to this one because of the long music play-25 minutes. 10 minutes of music, motion and lights, followed by 10 minutes of softer music, lights with no motion and then followed by 5 minutes of soft music with no lights or motion. Every other soother we had the music was under 10 minutes and baby would not be asleep yet and would be frustrated when it turned off. This works great at nap time. However at night, and especially in the middle of the night, the light is way too bright. It practically blinds my baby when it gets turned on. It looks like he is in a tanning bed. If they was a way to turn down the light, then the soother would have gotten 5 stars from me.

Battery-eater galore Jun 10, 2009
By J. Alexander My 4 year old son is absolutely addicted to his "fishies". He must have them to fall asleep. He has always loved Baby Einstein, as well. This was a perfect fit for us. However, buyers beware. The 25-minute timer, especially if you have the lights, motion and music turned on is very energy-intensive and requires LOTS of batteries. We have been through at least 200 batteries and we've only had the product a year or so - not so great for the pocketbook or the environment. Also, as others have mentioned, the features stop working gradually when the batteries are low. So, every so often, we have a 'crisis' in our house because "the fishies stopped going around", etc. - always a winner at bedtime! The challenge of the day is to find an equivalent product feature-wise that either doesn't consume so much energy or can be plugged in to the wall.

An Attractive Distraction. Jul 12, 2009
By Gary Peterson We've purchased a variety of toys for our 9-month-old son and he seems to prefer things that have to do with music. As such, my wife found the Baby Einstein Great Barrier Reef Soother and we installed it at one end of his crib. He enjoyed it right from the first moment, and it wasn't very long before he discovered how to turn it on. It was then on a lot, I might add.
After about a month or so, it stopped working. It seemed to shut down feature by feature, just like described in many of the reviews. We replaced the two different sets of batteries, but never could get it properly functioning again. Dismayed, we returned it to Target where we'd purchased it. We had no receipt, but had paid for it with a credit card, and Target cheerfully replaced the soother with a new one. The replacement seems to work fine, at least so far.
It's an interesting and attractive toy. Sometimes our son seems mesmerized by the little fishies and bright colorful lights. At other times he pays no attention at all but seems to enjoy the background music, which is rather good I might add. The soothing sounds seem to have no particular effect, or at least it's not noticeable. We like being able to turn the soother on when we put him to bed and have the toy automatically turn off after a set time. He's almost always asleep by that time, I might add. It seems rather bright for a sleep aid, but the light doesn't seem to bother our son. In the morning, he commonly turns it on to start the day.
I have mixed feelings about this product. Basically, I like it in that it is an attractive distraction and the boy obviously likes it. It's a battery burner, I should add, and I have questions about the long-term durability. For the moment, ours is working well and is a nice addition to his set of playthings.
