beats medela pump in style advanced Hands Down Mar 30, 2011
By g I own both the medela pump in style adv and ameda's purely yours pump. Ameda's pump is better than medela.
And durability and reliability are great. I am a working mom so I pumped a lot with baby #1 and am doing same with baby #2 - already have a freezer full of milk. This pump has lasted since 2008 with pumping daily 5 days/week (I breastfed baby #1 for 18 months) and it is still going great - I'm using it now.
Why ameda is superior to medela: 1) NO MOLD growth - milk cannot get into tubes. See below. After I found mold on my medela pump I went out and bought an ameda pump right away. 2) about half the price as medela if you just buy the pump and not the bag etc. 3) the ameda pump is easily freestanding, also has nice slots on the pump to hold your pumped milk in bottles. If you remove the medela pump from the backpack or bag you'll see the pump casing - the medela pump has holes in the casing around the pump so you don't really want to take it out of the bag - and nowhere to put your pumped bottles so they don't fall over.
Medela knows about the milk in the tubes problem - in fact there are instructions about this in the booklet that comes with their pump. Well, I got milk backed up in the tubes more than once despite following the instructions in the manual. Then I had to stop pumping and dry the tubes out. No more pumping that day. And, to my horror, despite running the MEDELA pump for a couple of minutes after every pumping as per instructions, and drying out the tubes if they got milk in them, I opened the faceplate of the medela pump one day and found MOLD growing on my medela pump. That was it, I bought an ameda pump and have never gone back.

Don't waste your money on Medela - This pump works great! Aug 05, 2011
By Nicole Flores It took me about two months before I decided to purchase the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump. I used a manual medela pump for the first 8 weeks after my daughter was born, which was fine until I went back to work. Then it became much harder to step away and pump manually. I hemmed and hawed over spending big bucks for the Medela electric pumps, even though all of my friends swore by it. I spoke with lactation consultants who said to try the Ameda pump, so I finally took the plunge. I am so happy that I did! This pump does the job perfectly, and at a fraction of the cost. I only bought the pump, which came with two 4-oz bottles. I didn't really need a cooler (I already had two), and I use a small tote bag to haul the pump back and forth from work and home. Also, the pump works with Medela bottles and Dr. Brown's bottles.
This pump is affordable, and it's does a great job. I'm glad that I didn't waste money on the Medela pump!

Love to hate Mar 30, 2011
By Honulii I borrowed a slightly older version of this from a friend. Although hospitals & pump manufactures are technically not supposed to recommend that you use used pumps, my lactation consultant said that Ameda makes their pumps so that it can be used by multiple users. The tubing is made one-way so that it protects any milk from flowing back into the tubes or machines, so there's never any concerns for body fluid sharing.
This little sucker held up through 8 months of my friend pumping 4-5 times a day and then a year later with me pumping 5-8 times a day for 9 months. Around month 7, the pump was acting up (would shut on/off in the middle of a session) and so I ordered a new one since I couldn't go even a day without pumping, but it ended up being just the plug-in cord that I had to replace. Whew! I gave her the new one, and kept her old one, so now I have my own pump to use for kid #2 (whenever that may be) but I have complete confidence that it will hold up for me.
I don't really have any other pumps to compare to, other than the professional one I used in the hospital for 2 days. But this pump is really compact and pretty durable. I felt it was on the loud side, and made a beep noise every time it would suction. The motor is also a little loud, especially if you leave it on a table. When I pumped at work in my office, I would hold the motor in my lap and no one outside even seemed to know that I was pumping.
I had to buy a set of larger flanges and ended up getting a total of 3 flange sets and extra bottles so I didn't have to wash anything while pumping at work (wash all 3 sets when I got home). I highly recommend this! The parts aren't terribly expensive, but sometimes hard to find and can get expensive if you have to pay for shipping (the Ameda sites have free shipping, but usually have to buy >$75).
My friend had bought this with the black carry bag and cooler set. She said the black bag made her feel like she was carrying a purse (more discreet) but I carried everything in a small duffle since I had 3 sets of flanges, which I felt was just as discreet. The cooler was useful, but really, any lunch cooler & icepacks would have worked just as well. It's cheaper to buy just the pump.
PROS: - Very durable (withstood a few drops & hits) - Portable - Reasonably priced - Easy to use
CONS: - The rubber valves tore easily and once they're torn, you lose suction (took me awhile to figure this out after a bunch of internet research). I bought them directly off the Ameda website and they're rather pricey because you have to pay for shipping. - A little noisy and makes a beep noise, but not sure if all cheaper pumps are like this - Parts can be hard to find and pricey if all you need is just one or two small things
The reason why my title is "love to hate" is because, although I loved breastfeeding my son, pumping was my least favorite part about it. I was secretly hoping that the pump would give up before I was ready to, but nope!

-UPDATE-
WOW! I wrote the above review the day the pump broke (April 14 - a Saturday) and first chance I got on the following Monday (today) I checked their website and called their clear, easy-to-find number for defective products. They picked up immediately (no robotic answering machine) and Veronica on the other end was extremely sympathetic and helpful. After determining that our unit was, in fact, on the fritz, she offered us a replacement, no more questions asked. We have moved overseas since purchasing the original, and so she arranged to have a replacement sent overnight to a family member who will bring the new unit when he visits in a couple of weeks (this seems to me the simplest and safest way. really). She then helped us find a local distributor we can rent a pump from temporarily and arranged to reimburse us for the cost. Very impressed with this prompt, personal and decisive response. Thanks Veronica!
Really. A little bit of empathy goes a LONG way.
For this I am upgrading the initial review from a 1 to a 3, taking in account the 5 star response.
The Purely Yours is an impressive unit when it works. My guess is they must have changed the manufacturing in some way and probably have some major bugs to work out. They seem prepared to handle the defective units, which tells me they are serious about getting this right over the long run. Let's hope so.

Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump Apr 25, 2011
By Pavlin We bought this pump after renting the Ameda ( professional) from the hospital. My question was is the small body will do the same job as the big one(professional)? And my answer is YES it's doing the same job.
