4Great stroller - except for one thing  Oct 06, 2011
By Ms. Miranda
When I was looking for a stroller to replace my Bugaboo Cameleon, I was looking for the following features:

* one-step fold
* all-terrain capability but in a four-wheel model
* large canopy
* height-adjustable handlebar
* large basket
* relatively small footprint
* lightweight and easy to put in the trunk

I thought I had found it all in the Valco Baby Quad, and I had ... most of it. Let's go over the pros first.

Pros: Overall this is a great stroller.
(1) It is very lightweight, only 23 lbs. My upper body strength is a joke, and this stroller is no problem to lift in and out of the back of my minivan.
(2) Maneuverability is fabulous -- turns on a dime, can be steered one-handed, and gets around well in tight spaces.
(3) All-terrain capability is great -- can go over grass and mulch very easily. Probably not designed for sand or snow, but I didn't need that much ruggedness in a stroller.
(4) Canopy is FABULOUS -- with the zip-out extension it will completely shade your child even if you are walking into the sun.
(5) Basket is pretty good; I've seen bigger, but it accommodates a large diaper bag or some shopping bags.
(6) Folding and unfolding is easy. It's not the one-hand gravity fold you get with cheaper strollers, but it is relatively simple. The fold is not terribly compact, but because I have a minivan space isn't an issue. It would certainly fit in the trunk of any car.
(7) Seat is easy to recline and put up.
(8) Ability to turn into a double with the joey seat. (I do not own one so don't know how well this actually works, but having the option is nice).

Cons:
(1) While it says the handlebar is adjustable,the tallest height is still too short for me, and I am not that tall (5'8 in shoes). And because it does not telescope, using the tallest height setting is not realistic anyway because you'll be kicking the back of the stroller. SO sad about this, because unfortunately it is a dealbreaker for me. I absolutely love almost everything else about the stroller. Why, why, WHY are most strollers made for midgets? I found the one product on the market designed to extend a stroller handle and am going to try it, but I'm not holding out much hope it will work.
(2) Rethreading the straps to make them a different height is a PAIN in the butt. You have to go into the "guts" of the stroller and it is pretty difficult to do. Since I wanted to use the stroller for both my 2yo and 4mo, this was disappointing. What I did was just put them on the lowest height setting and just adjust the straps themselves to be longer or shorter so either child can sit in the stroller.
(3) The instruction book for the stroller is strangely incomplete, nonlinear, and hard to follow. It entirely left out the step where you put the front wheels in! Fortunately I was able to figure it out because the design is pretty intuitive, but for a moderately expensive stroller I thought the manual should have been better.
(4) Related to but distinct from the handlebar height issue, the canopy back comes up so close to the handlebar itself that it was impossible to comfortably attach the parent console that I bought separately (the Sunshine Kids Buggy Buddy) since the stroller does not come with a cup holder or parent tray. I was totally fine with adding one on myself, but the fact that the stroller is made such that one won't fit kinda sucks.

I gave the Quad 4 stars because of all the stuff that I like about it. If I was 3 or 4 inches shorter, it would be the perfect stroller for me. It has most-terrain capability in a stable 4-wheel design, and is lightweight with fabulous maneuverability. If only the handlebar was just three or four inches higher ...
