Costly but safe & effective Sep 30, 2009
By Ed R. When we had our first child, we researched what type of sunblock was safe to use for our baby. We found that products with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide were the safest. Both of these ingredients rest on top of the skin, rather than getting absorbed into the skin. We also read that any SPF rating above 30 is unnecessary as they aren't actually more effective but contained more chemicals that could actually be harmful. Finding products that met those conditions were much harder to find than I expected.
The California Baby brand was about the only one we could find initially that used titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. We started out with the fragrance free lotion and it was good at blocking out the sun, but did not completely prevent a tan. It also required a bit more time to apply and was somewhat difficult to apply on the face as it is a bit runny. I bought the stick version to address those issues and carry both of them in our car and diaper bags. Also, unless you rub the sunblock in very well, your kids will look like ghosts, teehee.
We like how safe and effective the California Baby sunblock lotion and stick are for our children. We tend to use the lotion most of the time and use the stick only for their faces and for when we are short on time (which seems like all the time). The pack of 2 that Amazon sells this for is a bargain compared to what we have paid in brick and mortar stores. We will likely buy these again from Amazon next summer, when ours is likely to run out.

Good for Sensitive Skin Oct 27, 2009
By Manisha I am an adult and I use it. I have very sensitive skin and it works great. It does come out with a bit of white film. Use less and rub in and it help reduce the whiteness. Otherwise it does not irritate the skin.

works great - i like the stick form better Jul 28, 2007
By Elle they sell this in a stick form which is soooo much easier to use. this stuff is great - works great - only downside is that it makes your face white. anyhow, i'm so happy they make a product like this for babies and kids and people who don't like chemicals :)
The only sunscreen for your baby Apr 04, 2012

The only sunscreen that should touch your child until he/she is 3 years old. You do not want to innundate your child's skin with fake fragrances and toxic chemicals. A lot of commercial sunscreens have too much junk in them even for you as an adult. At his 3rd birthday we switched to coppertone sensitive skin 50 spf and it's wonderful and more affordable that cali baby. The best sunstick for the face for a child is Aveeno Baby 50 spf. It's the only way to get sunscreen on a wiggly baby's or kid's face. Go to the EWG website and it will give you the exact names of sunscreens that REALLY ACTUALLY WORK and will protect you and your child from dangerous UV rays. Don't trust any other sunscreen unless they've been evaluated by the scientists at EWG.
Not for super sensitive skin Jul 27, 2010
By Christine Park My 2 yo has very sensitive skin w/ a moderate case of eczema. This sunscreen seems to make her break out for some reason. It also, as expected w/ the ingredients listed, doesn't absorb and doesn't wash off too well (have to scrub it off). Onward w/ my search for the right sunblock...
